This programme is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of principles and practice of Substance Misuse Awareness. No prior knowledge is required.
The objectives of the course are to:
Cover a wide range of issues related to substance misuse, social effects, health and the various responses and interventions at a deeper and more comprehensive level than the Level 2 Drugs Awareness course.
The course leads to the award of the Substance Misuse Awareness (Level 2) from ASET, a leading UK awarding body recognised by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
The course is designed for study by distance learning at work or at home. Students receive course manual, assignments and studyguide plus tutor support by mail and email. You can start at any time and plan your studies over a period of up to one year from the time of registration.
Each element is followed by a written assignment, which is submitted and marked by your tutor. There is no external examination required.
Students may register at any time and have a full year to complete their studies. The course will take around 120 hours of study to complete.

The course is divided up into six modules, as follows:
Module 1: Understanding drug use:
â€¢ History of drug use
â€¢ the effects of drugs
â€¢ drug facts
â€¢ understanding attitudes and values about drugs
Module 2: Recognising and responding to drug use:
â€¢ Know the signs and symptoms relating to drug use
â€¢ the laws in relation to drug use
â€¢ problems associated with drug use
â€¢ harm reduction
â€¢ responses to drug use
â€¢ drug services
Module 3: Communicating with young people about drugs:
â€¢ Using effective communication skills when talking to young people about drugs
Module 4: Understanding solvent and volatile substance abuse (VSA):
â€¢ Reasons why VSA should be a cause for concern
Module 5: Awareness of issues concerning alcohol and young people:
â€¢ Issues surrounding the use/misuse of alcohol
â€¢ the different types of alcohol consumption and their potential effects
â€¢ the consequences associated with different types and levels of alcohol consumption
â€¢ attitudes towards and the impact of alcohol use on young people
Module 6: Blood borne viral infections related to drug use:
â€¢ Understand the nature, extent and effects of blood borne viruses
â€¢ understand how to prevent the transmission of blood-borne viruses
â€¢ understand the range of attitudes and values about blood-borne viral infections
